Lucy had severe hip dysplasia, so she preferred quiet activities that allowed her to lie down. Her calm personality and friendly spirit made her an especially good reading companion for kids, so she was an active R.E.A.D. volunteer for the Hennepin County Library system through the Paws to Read program. It would be hard to say who benefited most from Lucy’s volunteer work, since she loved meeting families as much as they loved meeting her!
Lucy’s therapy work resulted in a bit of celebrity status. Her story – a rescued dog with health issues who became a registered therapy animal – was very inspiring to a friend and gifted artist named Paul Sansale. He painted Lucy’s portrait, but then went on to paint dozens of other dogs, turning his work into calendars that are sold to benefit rescued pets who found new lives in helping others.
