Poodles were bred as water retrievers. Poodle hair gets heavy when wet, so hair was shorn to keep her afloat. To keep organs warm, hair was kept long over the chest and head. Cuffs remained to protect joints from rheumatism, and a topknot kept hair out of the eyes when swimming.
